Gender Equality entails treating men and women as equals in every respect. It provides for no discrimination on the basis of sex and equal opportunities for all. Historically, women have been oppressed and thus are considered to be the inferior or weaker sex. It thus is imperative to take measures to uplift their position in society so that they may enjoy the same status as men. Women have been subject to many harmful and degrading practices in the past in India. They have been forced to give dowry at the time of marriage, were denied education and the opportunity to work etc. For men and women to truly be equal, a change in mindset among all citizens is necessary.
