Improvement in the quality of air can be achieved by taking measures against air pollution. Besides deteriorating the Earth’s atmosphere, air pollution damages the health of people causing lung infections and diseases. Polluted air was responsible for 6·4 million deaths worldwide in 2015, highlighting the need for prompt action against it. Air Pollution is a major issue in India, particularly in cities like New Delhi, Patna and Allahabad. Vehicular emissions and fuel and biomass burning are the leading causes for the same. Studies have shown that an average Indian has 30% lower lung function than a European. Burning crop fields is another major cause of air pollution in India. Air pollution can be combatted by each of us by encouraging walking, cycling and use of public transport in place of using private vehicles. Let’s make the air breathable again.
